Origins of Vedic Jyotish are currently undated. In ancient India, prior to the written word, knowledge was passed on, in the Oral tradition, from teacher to student. The primary text is the Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra. Vedic Jyotish traces its origins in Astronomy or Gola as it was then called, and is linked to the Veda's and called a Vedanga. 

Our ancients looked up at the skies from Sunset to Sunrise and saw patterns of diamonds shining. There are some that moved and those that did not. The fixed cluster's were termed as Nakshatras or Asterisms. The importance of these in Chart interpretation is a vital part of Vedic Jyotish. Focus on Lunar movement was used to index time, and hence the Lunar Hindu Calendar. The Moon's placement at birth in a Nakshatra is also used to determine the Dasha Sequence. Moon is a key planet in the birth chart representing our deep psycho-emotional being and the idea of nurturing, compassion and feelings - the Manas. Jyotish of the Hindu's is so advanced that it can predict accurately events to 72 hours of occurence.
